Volunteer To Be An Acolyte

"Acolyte” comes from a Greek work meaning “helper.”  This tradition has a long history going all the way back through the ages of the Church and even into Old  Testament times.  Samuel was a sort of “acolyte” for Eli,  the priest. In modern usage, it is an opportunity for children and youth to have an active role in worship.  Although acolyte service is not limited to candle-lighting, that is often the most visible part of what they do.  The flame with which they enter the sanctuary represents the light of Christ in our midst.  The paired candles represent Christ’s human and divine natures.  At the end of the service, the light of Christ is symbolically carried out into the world as we go out to do ministry. We are now calling upon young people from grade 3 through high school age to take part in this meaningful act of worship.  In the fall, we will have a gathering of  these young people to talk about acolyte service, enjoy some pizza, and become familiar with the routine and the equipment. Meanwhile, we are creating a schedule for those who are willing to serve during the summer months.  If you have turned in your name as an acolyte volunteer, you will be contacted.  If you are interested and have not yet volunteered, you may  leave your name at the church office or cut out the acolyte volunteer form found in the Sunday insert and put it in the offering plate.  We can also use some “acolyte parent” volunteers willing to help oversee the pre-service robing and wick-lighting details. Until our group of acolytes grow in number, you will have the opportunity for frequent service.  We hope you will experience the joy of worshipping God in this special
