Christian Education

“Our goal will not be to find the ‘right’ way to worship at Fort King Presbyterian Church but to

help different generations speak wisely, and listen closely, to each other. “ Fort King Presbyterian has a number of children and youth ministries, both for children of the church and children in our community.

Retreats

Ft. King has three retreats a year - Church Family Retreat, Couples Retreat and Women's Retreat. Go  to the Fellowship Activities page for dates and details

Adult Classes

It is never too late to join in our two new adult Sunday School Classes. These two classes extend through Lent. The Sunday following Easter and the youth pancake breakfast, you have the opportunity to delve into one of two very different classes. If you have not been a regular Sunday School attendee, make a Lenten promise to add religious study as one of your spiritual disciplines. February 21 - March 28: Journey Inward: Celebrating Spiritual Disciplines Teacher: Buddy MacKay Time: 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Location: Session Room Last year, Buddy began the discussion around the classic book, Journey Inward, Journey Outward. It made many realize how much we still need to learn about the spiritual disciplines such as prayer, meditation, study and fasting. Even the most devout in the group shared how challenging it was to devote time and focus to the disciplines. This year, in preparation for Lent, we learn about different approaches to the disciplines, why we might be more comfortable with one over another, and strategies for adopting a more spiritual way of life. Church members and guests share experiences on their inward journeys.

February 21 - March 28: Why God Lets Disasters Happen and How Do We Respond? Teacher(s): Margaret Spontak, Cheryl Gans, Russell Rasco, Community Guests and Community Emergency Response Team Members Time: 9:15-10:15 a.m. Location: Fellowship Hall How do we reconcile God’s goodness with the problem of suffering righteous people? It is difficult to view the disaster in Haiti, the floods of New Orleans and the fires of California, without wondering why God let this happen especially since, disasters seem to fall on the poor and the disadvantaged. The first part of this course looks at that issue and possible reasons disasters and other painful events happen. It refers to similar episodes in the Bible and the outcomes of those events. The second half of the course looks at our Christian calling to respond to these events through our time, talents, treasures and prayers. Members of our church share their experiences in disaster preparation and assistance.

April 11 - May 23: Understanding the World Religions Teacher(s): Mary Beth Neely and Anthony Clegorne Time: 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Location: Session Room One aspect of becoming a multi-cultural church is understanding and respecting the wide range of religions in our community and our world. Understanding the foundations of our own religion is difficult enough. We generally don’t have time to do an in-depth study of the religious practices of others. This class will focus on the core beliefs and practices of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Judaism. We will discover what each has in common with our faith.

April 11 - May 23: Biblical Gardens – Creating Sabbath Spaces Teacher: Lucy Tobias Time: 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Location: Fellowship Hall and Outdoor Spaces With spring in the air, gardening is on many people's minds. God's world is displaying its majesty. Uncover the secrets of biblical gardens, historic and present day. Find out how to make gardens prayerful and meditative spaces. We will plan a visit to Shalom Park and talk about how we might start a special garden right here at church.

Discovery Classes

Classes are available if you are interested in learning more about the Presbyterian Church U.S. A. and Fort King. You meet people who are seeking and asking questions, just like yourself. Whether you are considering membership or have decided to join Fort

King, you will find these classes very informative. Call the church office at (352)694-4121 to find out when they begin.

Do We Care About The Children Of The Church? Fort King offers nursery care for children under 5 years of age during Sunday morning services. We have one paid staff person in the nursery, but we cannot operate without a volunteer each Sunday as our Child Security Policy requires two adults accompany any group of children. This means we need you! If 18 volunteers would volunteer three Sundays a year, it would completely fill the year's calendar! Please volunteer to help with this much needed service. Contact Onalee Mease at 687-3160 to volunteer. All the above classes begin at 9:15 a.m. and end at 10:15 a.m. For safety purposes, parents of primary children are requested to pick up the children from the CE Building at the end of class.

Child Security Policy!

Child Security Policy At the recommendation of the Christian Education Committee, the Session  has adopted a Child Security Policy that requires anyone working with our

children and youth to attend a training session of approximately 40 minutes. This includes teachers, High Tide and Youth Leaders, chaperones, nursery volunteers, VBS workers and Summer programs. For the protection  of our children and youth, as well as for the protection of our teachers, leaders and volunteers,  we feel this is of the utmost importance. We appreciate your willingness to support this policy by attending a training session. There will be two training opportunities.

If you have any questions, please contact the church office at 694-4121
